Project name: Management control system for the integrated optimization of the operation of wastewater treatment plants
Project acronym: SUPEROPTI
Leading research organization: Jožef Stefan Institute, Dr. Darko Vrečko, Ph.D.
Project manager at FIŠ: Prof. Ph.D. Biljana Mileva Boshkoska
Partners: “Jožef Stefan” Institute, University of Ljubljana Faculty of Electrical Engineering, KOMUNALA NOVO MESTO d.o.o., public company, Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto
Type of project: Developmental – research project
Brief description of the project:
Treatment plants are infrastructure systems that treat municipal and industrial wastewater with the goal of ensuring clean discharges into the environment. Treatment plants also have potential as a renewable energy source (chemical energy in the form of organic fractions of wastewater) and as a source of nutrients (especially phosphorus and nitrogen). This is an important social aspect from the point of view of the transition to renewable energy sources and a circular economy. Energy-positive operation, reuse of treated water, recovery of nutrients and carbon neutrality are the current global challenges in the field of water treatment, which turn treatment plants into water and resource restoration devices.
