Eco-School Programme at FIŠ

In 2024, the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto joined the international Eco-School programme – the largest education programme for sustainable development in the world. The programme is based on the “7 Steps” methodology, the successful implementation of which leads to obtaining the international environmental certificate known as the “Green Flag.”

FIŠ was awarded the Green Flag for the first time in September 2024, confirming its successful implementation of sustainability activities and the involvement of students, staff, and the wider community in environmental and socially responsible projects.

The programme at FIŠ is coordinated by Katja Uršič and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Urška Fric, together with the FIŠ Eco-Committee.

Implemented Activities

1. Setting up a separate waste collection system (April 2024)
We introduced new indoor and outdoor bins for separate waste collection (paper, plastic, organic waste, glass).

2. Clean-up campaign around the faculty and nearby city areas (April 2024)
Together, students and staff cleaned the surroundings of FIŠ and nearby public areas, contributing to a cleaner local environment.

3. Donation of computers to Loka Črnomelj Primary School (October 2024)
Responding to the school’s request in June 2024, we donated 12 used computers to Loka Črnomelj Primary School to modernise their IT equipment and improve students’ digital skills. The donation will provide better learning conditions and access to modern educational technologies, while also serving as an important example of community cooperation and sustainable development in education.

4. Charity collection of school supplies (July–August 2024)
Staff and students collected used and new school supplies for children with fewer opportunities, included in the programmes of the Association for Developing Voluntary Work Novo mesto.

5. Charity collection of clothes for newborns (November–December 2024)
In cooperation with the Maternity Ward of Novo mesto General Hospital, we organised a collection of clothes for newborns. Taking place in the pre-holiday season, the campaign encouraged students and staff to donate well-preserved clothing to meet the needs of the maternity ward.

6. Charity book collection (February–April 2025)
On the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, we donated 366 books in the Slovenian language to the Emona Association of Slovenians in Ruma (Serbia) to help rebuild their library after a fire. The campaign received positive media coverage and inspired new book collection initiatives.

In the coming years, FIŠ will continue to develop and carry out various charitable and environmental projects that will contribute to the sustainable development of the faculty as well as the local, regional, national, and international communities.

We want the Eco-School programme at FIŠ to be lively, open, and inclusive, so we invite all students and staff to propose new activity ideas or actively participate in already planned projects. You are welcome to send your suggestions, questions, or interest in participating to ekosola@fis.unm.si.
