Staff Mobility for Teaching

Staff mobility for teaching purposes (STA) is intended for academic staff who carry out teaching activities at a foreign higher education institution (Teaching Mobility).

Lecturers may participate in the Erasmus+ teaching staff mobility programme (“Mobility for teaching assignments – STA”), within which they perform teaching duties at a host institution abroad. Prior to the mobility period, the teaching programme must be agreed upon with the host institution. Academic exchanges may last from 2 working days up to 2 months, excluding travel time. A mandatory requirement of teaching staff mobility is the delivery of at least 8 teaching hours per week.

Through academic exchanges, higher education institutions are enabled to offer richer and more comprehensive teaching content, thereby fostering the exchange of professional knowledge and experience in pedagogical work. Such exchanges contribute to the establishment of new partnerships and the strengthening of existing ones between higher education institutions. At the same time, teaching staff mobility allows students who are unable to participate in international exchanges themselves to gain knowledge and experience from academic staff of higher education institutions from other European countries.

Application deadline: 31 October 2025 or until available funds are exhausted
Mobility implementation period: until 31 July 2026
Number of available mobilities: 2 teaching mobilities

The host institution must:

  • be located in an Erasmus+ Programme Country or in partner countries of regions 13 and 14,
  • hold a valid ECHE Charter,
  • have a signed bilateral agreement with FIS.

Employees may also propose a new host institution. In the event of mutual interest, FIS will conclude a bilateral agreement with the institution prior to the implementation of the mobility.

The Erasmus+ grant is intended to co-finance mobility-related costs and does not cover all expenses in full. Any difference must be covered by the participant from other sources or personal funds.

Types of Grants

  • Travel grant: determined by the distance between the place of residence and the mobility destination, calculated using the Erasmus Distance Calculator (straight-line distance).
  • Individual support: a daily allowance depending on the host country group (countries with higher, medium, or lower living costs).

Reimbursements are based on actual costs, supported by appropriate financial documentation, up to the maximum permitted amounts.

Daily allowances and travel costs are financed up to a certain limit within the available funds. More information is available at this link.

The following may apply:

  • employees of FIS (fixed-term or permanent contracts, full-time or part-time),
  • members of the Academic Assembly of FIS,
  • collaborators engaged at FIS under service or copyright contracts.

If a candidate is simultaneously employed at another institution, they must submit written confirmation that they have not received co-financing for the same mobility from another employer. This requirement ensures funding transparency and prevents double financing.

Applications must be submitted via the application form published on the FIS website.

The call is open until all available places are filled. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, providing candidates with greater flexibility in planning their mobility.

Selection Criteria

Priority is given to:

  • employed staff of FIS,
  • candidates who have not yet participated in mobility.

Additional considerations include:

  • the candidate’s pedagogical and research development,
  • the contribution of the mobility to the development of cooperation with the foreign institution,
  • the importance of the mobility for promotion to an academic title.

Based on the proposal of the International Mobility Committee, the Dean makes the final selection decision.

Sample Documentation:

Before the Mobility

The selected candidate must, in cooperation with FIS and the host institution, prepare and sign a Mobility Agreement – Staff mobility for teaching assignments, confirming the programme and scope of teaching activities.

After the Mobility

The participant must:

  • complete the final report (EU questionnaire),
  • submit the required documentation for cost reimbursement.

If the report is not submitted, FIS may request partial or full reimbursement of the granted funds. In cases of force majeure, FIS will notify the National Agency and act in accordance with its instructions.

Highlights of Erasmus+ mobility for teaching

Between 29 May 2023 and 2 June 2023, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Urška Fric participated in staff mobility at the University of Zadar within the Erasmus+ programme, where she worked at the Department of Information Sciences. She was involved in direct teaching activities, delivering lectures to doctoral students of the study programme Knowledge Society and Information Transfer as part of the course Methodology in Social Sciences and Humanities. Doctoral students from the Humanities doctoral programme also attended the lectures.

The lecture topics were based on qualitative research, with a particular focus on the comparison and use of software tools for computer-assisted qualitative data analysis. During her stay at the Department of Information Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Urška Fric also held consultations with doctoral students in the field of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis. She undoubtedly gained valuable experience in teaching qualitative methodology.

Between 31 March 2022 and 1 July 2022 (31 March–29 May 2022 within the Erasmus+ mobility project), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Urška Fric participated in staff mobility at the University of Zadar, where she was hosted by two departments—initially the Department of Sociology and subsequently the Department of Information Sciences. At both departments, she was involved in direct teaching activities. At the Department of Sociology, she delivered lectures for doctoral students as part of the course Qualitative Research Methods, and for undergraduate/master’s students as part of the course Advanced Qualitative Methods. At the Department of Information Sciences, she taught doctoral students in the course Methodology in Social Sciences and Humanities.

The lecture topics were based on qualitative research from research design to implementation, with an emphasis on learning about, comparing, and using software tools for qualitative data analysis. In addition to establishing new research contacts and ideas, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Urška Fric gained highly valuable experience of teaching abroad and an in-depth insight into both direct and indirect teaching activities at the host institution.

Upon returning from her Erasmus+ experience, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Urška Fric also emphasised that active participation and work at foreign institutions are of exceptional importance for both teaching and research, as insight into practices elsewhere is only possible through direct involvement in institutional work. She strongly recommends the Erasmus+ experience for the purpose of gaining new research contacts, becoming familiar with teaching processes, examples of good practice, and their exchange—both to higher education staff and academic teachers.

Between 20 February and 24 February 2023, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomaž Aljaž participated in an Erasmus+ mobility at the School of Computer Engineering, Gran Canaria.

The preparation and implementation of the Erasmus+ mobility at the School of Computer Engineering focused on establishing the foundations for future cooperation in teaching, student mobility, and potential joint projects.

Assoc. Prof. Aljaž presented the subject areas and content he covers and took great interest in learning about their activities in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence. He particularly highlighted an ongoing computer vision project related to the Gran Canaria Trail Race, which took place during the week of his exchange. Using computer vision at various locations (in the city, in the mountains, etc.), the project analysed individual runners and provided data for further analysis. As part of the mobility, he also toured the campus, classrooms, and laboratories, and visited the city of Las Palmas.

At the end of the mobility, Assoc. Prof. Aljaž emphasised that they parted with a shared wish and hope for mutual cooperation and that this collaboration would continue in the future.

Finally, he expressed his gratitude to the Dean, Prof. Dr. Matej Makarovič and Associate Professor Dr. Katarina Rojko, for providing both logistical and financial support for the implementation of the mobility, which will remain a fond memory for him. He also expressed special thanks to the host representative, Dr. José Daniel Hernández Sosa, who provided comprehensive technical and logistical support before and during the mobility.
