The study programme Game and Extended Reality Development takes you into a world where creativity meets technology. The study programme provides practical, up-to-date knowledge in the fields of video game development, virtual and augmented reality, programming, interactive content, and digital design. The programme is designed to guide students towards development-oriented project work from the very beginning, following real industry challenges, allowing students to not only acquire knowledge but also actively build upon it through concrete projects.
The programme is interdisciplinary, modern, and future-oriented—designed with the rapidly growing global industry in mind that goes far beyond entertainment and influences education, culture, and society. Game development and extended reality in the international academic environment represent a cutting-edge field of study that combines technical and creative expertise, thus linking creativity with technological progress. Game development and extended reality do not merely involve creating entertainment, but represent a dynamic, interdisciplinary field that, through its archetypes, also influences the development of culture and education, and consequently the development of society itself.

Graduates will gain:
- comprehensive and practical knowledge in the field of game development as well as virtual and augmented reality, combining programming, interactive design, and modern development technologies,
- broad knowledge for working on real-world projects, with an understanding of the entire development process and readiness for both independent and team-based work in a rapidly developing industry,
- creative and technical thinking, the ability to solve complex problems, and flexibility, which enables them to successfully integrate into various digital and creative environments at home and abroad.
The study programme is carried out in a full-time and part-time mode of study.
The full-time study is free, also for employed students.*
*For EU citizens and citizens of the countries with a signed bilateral agreement with Slovenia.
Enrolment into the first year
The following individuals can be enrolled in the first year of the higher professional study programme Game and Extended Reality Development:
- Those who have completed the general matura examination;
- Those who have completed the vocational matura examination in one of the four-year secondary education programmes.
In the case of limited enrolment, the candidates will be selected according to the following criteria:
- Overall performance at the final exam, vocational matura examination or general matura examination – 60% of points;
- Overall score in the third and fourth year of secondary education – 40% of points.
To advance from the first to the second year, the student must acquire at least 45 ECTS from the first year. To advance from the second to the third year, the student must complete all obligations from the first year in addition to acquiring at least 45 ECTS from the second year.
If a student enrolls directly in the second year after completing a higher education professional program adopted after 1 January 1994, they must pass the prescribed additional exams before enrolling in the third year.
If a student enrols directly in the third year after completing a higher education programme adopted before 1 January 1994, or after completing a higher education professional or university study programme adopted before 11 June 2004, they must take the prescribed additional exams before completing their studies.
The faculty may allow the student to advance to a higher year, even if the required conditions are not met, in the following circumstances: maternity, prolonged illness, exceptional family or social circumstances, participation in top cultural, sports or professional events.
A student who does not meet the conditions for enrolling in a higher year may repeat a year once during their studies or change their study programme or course due to non-fulfilment of obligations in the previous study programme or course. It is not possible to repeat the third year because an additional year (absolventski staž) is intended for fulfilling the missing obligations.
In accordance with the applicable legislation, a student’s student status may be extended for a maximum of one year if the student:
- Does not enrol in a higher year for justified reasons;
- Does not graduate within 12 months after the end of the last semester for justified reasons;
- Gives birth during their studies.
Depending on their academic achievements, the student may complete the study in a shorter period of time than provided for in the study programme.
To complete the programme, the student must successfully complete all study obligations prescribed by the study programme, amounting to 180 ECTS.
A student who enrols directly in a higher year must complete all prescribed additional exams in addition to all regular study obligations of the second and/or third year to complete their studies.
The students the of higher professional study programme Game and Extended Reality Development will obtain the following competences:
- Ability to perform all phases of software development: design, development, testing, implementation and maintenance.
- Research, documentation, analysis and interpretation of development and design concepts in the contexts of video games and extended reality.
- Identification and evaluation of current and emerging technologies and contemporary methods, skills and techniques in the fields of video games and extended reality, and assessment of their applicability to address user needs.
- Ability to effectively produce project documentation, flowcharts, diagrams and design solutions suitable for the development and production of video games and extended reality.
- Ability to interdisciplinarily integrate and build on knowledge from other related creative fields.
- Ability to independently keep up to date with the latest technological developments and gain new skills useful in video game and extended reality production.
- Ability to work as part of a team at all phases of software development and design.
- Ability of analytical and algorithmic thinking.
- Expertise in modern data processing tools and specialised software.
- Understanding of the importance of quality and striving for quality in professional work through autonomy, self-initiative, (self-)criticality, (self-)reflexivity and (self-)evaluation.
- Compliance with ethical principles in the production of video games and extended reality.
- The ability of flexible usage of knowledge in practice.
Students of the higher professional study programme Game and Extended Reality Development will also obtain course-specific competences, which are listed in the individual curricula of the programme.
Curriculum – Game and Extended Reality Development
The programme Game and Extended Reality Development lasts for three years and is divided into six semesters. It includes 26 courses, of which 23 are obligatory (including Work Practice) and 3 are elective. It concludes with the completion of the diploma project.
