Who is Prof. Dr. Matej Makarovič?
Prof. Dr. Matej Makarovič is a full professor of sociology, a researcher, and a long-time higher education administrator who, in recent years, has also significantly linked his academic and professional work to the development of the Faculty of Information Studies. As dean of FIŠ and one of the key contributors to the faculty’s development, he is now directing his vision toward a new chapter—the development of the University of Novo mesto.
Prof. Dr. Makarovič earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Ljubljana, continued his master’s studies at Central European University and Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, and received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Ljubljana in 1999.
His research interests include social change from comparative and global perspectives, political change, and the relationships between society, the media, and technology.
International engagement also constitutes a significant part of his academic career. He has served as a visiting researcher and lecturer at numerous universities abroad in Europe, the U.S., and the Middle East, including the University of Nevada, Reno; the University of Cincinnati; the University of Hawai’i at Manoa; the American University of Beirut; the Lebanese American University; and Babeș-Bolyai University in Romania.
He also combines his academic expertise with leadership experience. Before joining FIS, he served as dean of the Faculty of Applied Social Studies in Nova Gorica from 2011 to 2016, and prior to that, he was associate dean for quality at FIS. He has been the dean of the Faculty of Information Studies since 2020, and in 2024 he was re-elected to serve as dean for the 2024–2028 term.
Under his leadership, the Faculty of Information Studies has continued to develop its academic, research, and international activities; another key priority has been the integration of FIS into the core of the new public university based in Novo mesto.
Prof. Dr. Makarovič is also active beyond the confines of his faculty. Since 2012, he has chaired the Slovenian National Committee for the MOST Program at the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO, and within the European Sociological Association, he co-chairs the research network on the sociology of transformations.
