The Interconnection of Architecture, in Style and Function, with Video Games and Virtual Spaces

Architecture in video games and virtual spaces is not merely a scenographic backdrop but a constitutive element that grounds the identity of a world and structures the player’s experience. In this lecture, I will examine this relationship on two intertwined levels. On the stylistic level, architectural idioms build atmosphere and narrative. On the functional level, scale, proportion, rhythm and light act as implicit mechanisms of level design that guide movement and orientation. Drawing on selected examples, I will argue that style and function are inseparable in compelling virtual spaces: virtual architecture transforms form into meaning, and space into experience.

The lecture will take place on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 11 a.m. via Zoom.
