On 13 and 14 May, as part of the Days of Slovenian Informatics conference, the second, 24-hour round of the first Arnes nationwide Hackathon took place in Portorož. Under the slogan “Co-shape the future with open science”, more than 70 students from all over Slovenia competed in solving topical and important issues, of which the best 40 made it to the final round.

The winning team, called IDealni Scenarij, consisting of Alen Cigler, Ruben Ferreira, Hana Skitek, Erazem Stanonik and Jana Volk, presented a solution to efficiently manage, share and exploit data without risking security, privacy or data sovereignty. Second place went to Filip Štamcar, Nik Pirc and Matija Derganc from the Kenguruji group, who improved a flood forecasting model within 24 hours, creating new flood maps of Slovenia, comparing the data with existing flood protection infrastructure and displaying the estimated water level data according to the weather forecast on a website. Third place in the competition went to members of the Rudarji znanja group, Blaž Erzar, Haris Kupinić, Luka Salvatore Pecoraro, Jaša Samec and Jovana Videnović, who created a project called žARKO, which uses photos and other data to identify short-term irradiation, predict the amount of energy produced by solar power plants and detect cell failure or malfunctioning due to dirt.

During HackathON, mentors and a panel of experts from the different fields addressed by HackathON provided expert help and support to the participants. Among them was also a representative of our faculty, Jani Pogačar, a member of our IT department and system administrator of our HPC Centre.
