We would like to inform you that asist. dr. Maruša Gorišek, in the process of election to the title of assistant professor in the field of Sociology, will give a public trial lecture entitled The role of science in society.
Abstract:
The complexity of modern societies has made the involvement of experts in political decision-making a necessity. Experts are involved in various stages of political decision-making through expert bodies, advisory groups, and other committees, where they, as individuals with in-depth knowledge and experience, are tasked with bringing facts and evidence to the fore, drawing attention to important issues, and facilitating informed public debate. It is often mentioned that experts should play an even greater role in political decision-making. According to the European Values Survey (2018), more than 78% of Slovenians think that a political system in which experts make decisions instead of the government would be good or very good. On the other hand, the events of recent years have shown a strong resistance to experts and the emergence of sceptical groups that put more trust in alternative explanations and advice. This lecture aims to address this dilemma. In the first step, we address the theoretical framework of the question of the role of experts in society: who are experts, and what are the different views on their role in society and especially in the political process? Next, we showcase some of the conducted research and tackle the issue of experts' role in society from a practical standpoint. Finally, we will discuss possible challenges and topics for further research.
