World 5.0: When the Advice of Previous Generations Is No Longer Enough
Socialization, Social Change, and Young People’s Transition to Adulthood
“Study hard, and you’ll get a good job.”
“First a job, then an apartment and a family.”
“If you try hard enough, you’ll succeed.”
This advice is familiar. But how useful is it in a world where ways of working, relationships, technologies, and paths to adulthood are changing? And do all young people have the same opportunities to follow them?
In this lecture, we’ll explore—through examples from youth work, education, and international mobility—how the social environment shapes young people’s life opportunities. We will examine the role of family, peers, and digital environments in socialization and reflect on the connections between personal decisions, social expectations, and inequalities.
Through discussion and brief case studies, we will examine why the same piece of advice can open doors for one person while setting an unattainable expectation for another. We will also consider which pieces of advice remain valuable, which need to be updated, and how educational institutions can help young people chart their own paths.
The lecture will take place on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. via Zoom.
