In 2019, the European Union selected eight supercomputing centers to host the EuroHPC supercomputing infrastructure, including the Slovenian center. Within the framework of this center, the project “Upgrading National Research Infrastructures – HPC RIVR” was launched, which is the most powerful supercomputing system in Slovenia. The project involves establishing a supercomputing center with the primary goal of strengthening national high-performance computing capabilities to meet the needs of Slovenia’s research, innovation, and economic sectors. The applicant and coordinator of the HPC RIVR project is the University of Maribor, while the consortium partners are the Institute of Information Science (IZUM) and the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo Mesto.

HPC RIVR places Slovenia among countries with advanced supercomputing technology and ranks it among the 100 largest supercomputers in the world on the Top500 list. The project specifically supports research and development of new services in fields that significantly shape global trends in supercomputing.

Part of the HPC RIVR project is HPC Trdina, which represents a test supercomputing environment that contributes to the sustainable development of the Dolenjska region and the wider area. HPC Trdina is located in the upgraded server room of the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo Mesto and enables the expansion of the faculty’s IT infrastructure and its smooth operation. HPC Trdina is built on the HPC Maistra platform, which is located at the University of Maribor.

The HPC Trdina system runs on 563 cores and 3.8 TB of DDR4 RAM, delivering 12 TFLOPS of computing power, with 426 TB of disk storage available for data. We selected the minimum number of components required to build a supercomputing system that enables fast access to HPC Maistro and HPC Vega, which is located at IZUM.
