On Friday, 17 October 2025, the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto (FIS) hosted its traditional Open Day of our HPC Trdina, which attracted numerous secondary school students interested in the fields of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.

The event began with an address by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maruša Gorišek, Vice-Dean for Scientific Research at FIS, who gave a brief presentation of the faculty and emphasised the importance of modern digital skills in the development of the information society.

This was followed by a lecture from Prof. Dr. Biljana Mileva Boshkoska, Head of the Laboratory for HPC, AI and Data Science at FIS, who presented the capabilities of the HPC Trdina supercomputer and its role in the development of research projects in Slovenia. On this occasion, she also introduced the European strategic initiative SLAIF – Slovenian AI Factory, in which FIS participates together with the SLING network. The SLAIF project will establish a high-performance computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence in Slovenia and enable closer cooperation between science, industry, and the public sector in developing advanced AI solutions.

Prof. Dr. Srđan Škrbić also took part in the event, presenting practical examples of artificial intelligence applications.

After the presentations, participants had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the server room and see a live demonstration of the HPC Trdina supercomputer, gaining deeper insight into its operation and use in big data processing and machine learning.

The event was organised in cooperation with the national supercomputing network SLING, through which FIS promotes the use of high-performance computing in education and research.
