The University of Novo mesto has announced its first election to select a rector for a four-year term from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2030. Until a new rector is elected, Prof. Dr. Janez Povh will serve as acting rector of the University of Novo Mesto.
The first round of the rector’s election will take place on Friday, September 11, 2026; a potential second round will be held on September 21, 2026.
An election commission has also been appointed, consisting of: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jelena Klisara, chair of the commission; Prof. Dr. Franci Mrzel, vice-chair; Kaja Kranjčič, member; Jerneja Šurla Gašperšič, alternate member; Nastja Pevec, member; and Ilhana Ljubijankić, alternate member.
The University of Novo mesto is thus facing an important milestone—its first rector election and the formation of the university’s new leadership.
The senates of the member institutions have been asked to propose candidates for rector within 30 days of the adoption of this decision, to obtain the candidates’ consent to their nomination, and to submit the nominations to the election committee along with supporting statements.
The senates of the member institutions may nominate full professors as candidates for rector who are involved in the teaching and research activities at the university and meet the other conditions specified in the university’s bylaws.
The rector is elected in a general and direct election for a four-year term by three groups of voters:
Faculty members, researchers, research assistants, university staff, and other personnel involved in the teaching process who are employed by the university or its member institution for at least 25 percent of a full-time equivalent, students and other employees who have an employment contract with the university or its member institution for at least 25 percent of a full-time equivalent. The voter groups are assigned different weightings when the votes are tallied.
The group of students and the group of other employees each account for 20 percent of the total votes, while the group of university faculty, researchers, research assistants, university staff, and other staff involved in the educational process accounts for 60 percent of the total votes.
